Before the dawn, I wove the air
A whisper bright, both pure and fair
From silent void the echoes grew
A harmony both old and new
I sang of seas, their endless tide
Of mountains tall, the earth’s proud guide
The stars took flame, their courses ran
To light the dreams of Elves and Man
The winds were born, the rivers strong
Each heart was set within the song
Though shadows strove to break the tone
My music flows, unbounded my own
And all shall find, when night is gone
The world made whole within the dawn
The lyrics of Eru’s song captures the beauty, order, and harmony of creation. Each line reflects how Eru brings the universe into life through music. Seas, mountains, stars, winds, and rivers all emerge from his melody. Even when discord arises, his music is not overcome, instead, it weaves all things into a greater whole. The song emphasizes the themes of unity, hope, and renewal, showing that no matter the shadows or struggles, Eru’s design leads creation toward light and fulfillment. It reflects Tolkien’s view of creation as fundamentally good and purposeful.
I wove a fire of secret flame
To crown myself with lordly name
I bent the chords, I broke the line
To shape the world as though ‘twere mine
My thunders rolled, the heavens shook
I scorned the path the master took
With iron tones I sought my throne
To rule the earth and sky alone
The seas grew dark, the winds grew wild
My voice corrupted song once mild
Yet through the clash, His music stayed
My might undone where light obeyed
Still in the depths my echoes long
A shadow bound within the song
Melkor’s song portrays rebellion and the corruption of harmony. His lyrics twist Eru’s themes, as he seeks power and dominion for himself. The fire, thunder, and storms represent the chaos he brings by trying to impose his own will over creation. Yet, even in his defiance, Melkor cannot truly create, he can only distort what Eru has made. The final lines acknowledge that through his voice leaves scars on the world, it remains bound within the greater music, never able to triumph over Eru’s purpose. This song illustrates the dangers of pride and selfishness, and the inevitability of Eru’s ultimate victory.
I like how in Melkor's song, you acknowledged that Eru's might and power triumphs over everything. It makes me wonder if Melkor does what he does because he somehow thinks he will overpower Eru. I find the idea that Melkor knows that what he is doing is futile, yet he still tries to fight anyway a fascinating idea.
